Montpellier closes major performing arts center after flooding

The Corum in Montpellier, France, is closed to the public until further notice. After being flooded during the recent storms, this building—which houses several performance venues—has become too dangerous.

Serving as a convention center, opera house, and exhibition center all at once, the Corum brings together several activities under one roof in three different halls of 2000, 745 and 318 seats.

The organization is now relocating the planed events to the large 6000 seat hall Zénith and other venues in Montpellier.

The administrative president of the building, Christian Assaf, said in the radio: « … we will be working with the fire department and the prefecture on a partial reopening of the building. We hope that the first rooms will be able to open within a month, followed by a second section of the building in the medium term, and, in the longer term, a third section of the building, »

Since the large hall, with 2,000 seats, was the hardest hit by the water damage, it appears that repairs to this hall will take the longest. This will affect the major symphony concerts and opera productions.
