NTPC’s Unchahar Thermal Power Station is set to expand its power generation capacity with the addition of a new 800 MW unit, a move that will significantly strengthen electricity supply in Uttar Pradesh and help meet the growing power demand across northern India.

Preparations for the installation of the new unit have already begun, and discussions are underway at the highest levels of NTPC. Once commissioned, the 800 MW unit will be the largest generating unit at the Unchahar project and will substantially enhance the station’s overall capacity.

The demand for electricity has been rising steadily across the country, prompting power producers to focus on capacity expansion. In line with this objective, NTPC has initiated plans to increase generation at its Unchahar facility, which currently has an installed capacity of 1,550 MW.

The power station presently operates six units. Units 1 to 5 have a generation capacity of 210 MW each, while Unit 6 has a capacity of 500 MW. The proposed 800 MW unit will take the project’s total installed capacity to 2,350 MW.

According to officials, the project site has adequate land available for the new unit, and all key parameters required for expansion have been found satisfactory. The next step will involve preparing a detailed project report (DPR), following which the formal implementation process will commence.

The expansion is expected to improve power availability and strengthen energy security in the region. It will also help address the increasing electricity requirements of several northern states.

Power generated from the Unchahar Thermal Power Station is supplied through the Northern Grid to nine states and Union Territories, including Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh. Rising power consumption in these regions has underscored the need for additional generation capacity.

The planned expansion reinforces NTPC’s commitment to meeting India’s growing energy needs while supporting economic growth and development across the northern region.
