NTPC’s NVVN Commissions 250 MW Battery Storage Project, Boosting India’s Energy Storage Capacity – Indian PSU
NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has commissioned its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project with a capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh, marking a significant step in NTPC’s expansion into large-scale energy storage.
According to NTPC’s regulatory disclosure, the project achieved commercial operation with effect from 00:00 hours on October 27, 2026. Power scheduling commenced on October 28, 2026.
NVVN is acting as the Battery Energy Storage System Implementing Agency (BIA) for the project.
Battery Storage to Strengthen Grid Stability
Battery Energy Storage Systems enable electricity to be stored and supplied when required, helping power utilities manage fluctuations in demand and improve grid reliability.
The 250 MW/500 MWh project represents a major development in NVVN’s efforts to expand its presence in the energy storage segment. Such systems can support the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid by storing surplus power and making it available during periods of higher demand.
Energy storage is increasingly important as India expands its renewable energy capacity and seeks greater flexibility in managing electricity supply.
NVVN Expands Its Energy Storage Portfolio
NVVN has been entrusted with implementing battery storage projects under the Government of India’s viability gap funding (VGF) framework. The initiative is intended to support the development of grid-scale battery storage infrastructure and improve the commercial viability of such projects.
NTPC’s 2024-25 annual report outlined NVVN’s role in implementing standalone BESS projects under both the market and Central Public Sector Undertaking components of the programme. The company has been involved in tendering and project implementation activities to expand storage capacity.
The commissioning of the 250 MW/500 MWh project marks an important milestone in NVVN’s transition beyond electricity trading towards a broader role in supporting India’s evolving power infrastructure.
As renewable energy generation grows, large-scale battery storage is expected to play an increasingly important role in balancing supply and demand, supporting grid stability and improving the utilisation of clean energy.
