Another US airline, Silver Airways, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to restructure its finances and iron out issues. The regional airline operates flights in Florida and to the Caribbean using a fleet of ATR turboprop planes. This is the latest carrier in the United States to file for bankruptcy protection after Spirit Airlines.
Silver Airways files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Florida-based regional carrier Silver Airways
has filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida. While more details will emerge in the coming months, airlines file for bankruptcy protection as part of a crucial business restructuring decision to sort out their debts and assets.

The airline hopes to complete this process in the first few months of 2025 as it looks to strengthen its finances. In an official statement, Silver Airways announced,
“We want to share an important step Silver Airways has taken to ensure a sustainable future for our company. Today, we voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida. This decision will allow us to secure additional capital and undertake a financial restructuring that will strengthen our position as a competitive airline, ultimately benefiting you—our valued customers.
“We anticipate completing this process by the first quarter of 2025, emerging stronger and ready to continue serving you with the same dedication we’ve upheld for over 13 years.”
Operations to continue as usual
An announcement such as this can raise several questions among various stakeholders, employees, and passengers. Silver Airways has reassured that the bankruptcy filing will not affect its operations and that flights will continue to operate as usual.
The airline highlighted the following points in its official statement:
- All tickets remain valid, and the carrier will continue operating as usual.
- Passengers can book flights with Silver through its website or any other channel.
- United and JetBlue customers, including loyalty program members, will experience no disruptions to their bookings or services.
- Tickets purchased through any other airline or agency will be honored.
While filing for bankruptcy is not an easy decision, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a company. Major organizations, including airlines, have applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to help them get through difficult financial turbulence. It is also an opportunity to plan out a new strategy for debt and assets. It remains to be seen how Silver Airways emerges from this in the coming months.

About Silver Airways
Silver Airways is a regional airline headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It uses its fleet of ATR aircraft to fly between gateways in Florida and the Caribbean.
The carrier was formed in 2011 after Gulfstream International Airlines (1988-2011) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The airline was rebranded as Silver Airways, and for a short while, it operated flights under the “United Express” banner.
According to ch-aviation, Silver Airways currently has eight ATR 42-600 airplanes, one of which is inactive, and six ATR 72-600 planes, one of which is also inactive.
The ATR turboprop is not a very popular aircraft in the United States, and Silver Airways became the first carrier in the country to operate the newly redesigned ATR-600 series aircraft. The carrier’s website states that it “had been nearly 25 years since a new ATR had flown in the U.S. It marked the first time revenue passengers have flown an ATR-600 operated by a U.S. carrier and the first time a fully independent U.S. regional airline has taken delivery of a new aircraft in many decades.”

Silver Airways flies to most major destinations in Florida, including Key West, Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale, among others, and to several destinations in the Caribbean, such as Georgetown, Nassau, and others in the Bahamas and a bunch of other destinations in the region.
