Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Inaugurates International Conference on Climate Resilience and Water Sustainability at IIT Roorkee – Indian PSU
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) today hosted the inaugural session of the 12th Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Hydrology (IAHS) — a premier global event dedicated to advancing sustainable water management, hydrological innovation, and climate resilience.
The Assembly, featuring 627 participants from 49 countries and 682 scientific contributions, is one of the largest in IAHS history. The week-long conference aims to foster global collaboration through in-depth discussions, workshops, and networking to promote climate-adaptive and sustainable water resource management.
Shri Anand Bardhan, Chief Secretary, Government of Uttarakhand, graced the event as Chief Guest and inaugurated the session. Commending IIT Roorkee and IAHS for their contributions to hydrological science, he stated,
“Hydrology is critical for climate change resilience, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development. Institutions like IIT Roorkee bridge global knowledge with local action, empowering both communities and policymakers to make informed, sustainable decisions.”
The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp and the IIT Roorkee Kulgeet, followed by addresses from leading dignitaries including Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee; Prof. Salvatore Grimaldi, President, IAHS; Dr. V.M. Tiwari, Vice President, INSA and Director, CSIR-NEIST; Prof. Sumit Sen, President, IAHS SA 2025; and Prof. Ankit Agarwal, Convener.
Highlighting the global significance of the conclave, Prof. K.K. Pant remarked, “This IAHS Scientific Conclave at IIT Roorkee reflects our commitment to addressing global water challenges through innovation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. I am confident that this six-day conclave will inspire new ideas, long-term partnerships, and transformative solutions for water science and society.”

The proceedings of the IAHS Scientific Conclave 2025 were also unveiled during the inaugural session, marking the beginning of an engaging week featuring scientific discussions, technical sessions, exhibitions, and international collaborations.
The event underscores India’s leadership in hydrological research, reaffirming IIT Roorkee’s pivotal role in shaping global conversations around climate resilience and water sustainability.
