The 2024 US presidential election will take place on November 05 and on December 17, electors will cast their votes. Nominating contests in each state and territory have already begun in January and wrap up in June. The Republican and Democratic conventions will take place in July and August, respectively.
Victory for Donald Trumpin the US presidential election this year means there will be regression of green US policies. Which could put the world’s climate goals at risk.
The chances of limiting global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels are already slim and Trump’s antipathy to climate action would have a major impact on the US, which is the world’s second biggest emitter of greenhouse gases and biggest oil and gas exporter.
Though climate change is only one of many priorities, like ending poverty, ending hunger, ending pandemics, yet without stopping climate change, none of these crucial tasks will be possible.
So the first order of priority is to have the climate crisis under control. The head of the UN’s climate change has already urged citizens to “raise their voices” over global warming as more than half of the world goes to the polls in the months ahead. Simon Stiell, executive secretary of UN Climate Change, said there was a “disconnect” between the action ordinary people wanted governments to take to tackle global warming and the response of governments.
