Watch how you handle those batteries

If you work in logistics and fulfillment, chances are you handle at least some products that contain lithium-ion batteries—after all, they’re used to power everything from laptops to cellphones to cordless power tools nowadays. But not all of the people who deal with those goods have been fully trained on how to handle those batteries safely.

To address that gap, the hazardous materials training specialist The Bureau of Dangerous Goods Ltd. (BDG) now offers training on lithium battery handling through a series of monthly webinars. The classes cover common shipment configurations, including standalone batteries, batteries packed alongside equipment, and batteries contained in equipment. The goal is to provide targeted training that provides participants with the guidance they need without sitting through lengthy discussions of topics that may not apply to their role.

BDG also notes that there have been many changes recently in regulations for different modes of transport. So it’s important to know whether you need to follow guidelines from the U.S. Department of Transportation (if batteries are moving by ground transport), the International Air Transport Association (for air shipments), or the International Maritime Organization (for ocean shipments).
