Who Are the Most Faked Artists in History?

What makes an artwork real? This seemingly straightforward question can actually be quite loaded.

A faked artwork is generally considered to be a copy of an existing work. This seems clear enough, but what about when an artist copies his or her own work? A forgery, on the other hand, imitates an artist’s style to create a new work. But what if the forged artist was someone who challenged concepts of artistic originality and appropriated images from others?

Art trickery can get tricky. And yet it persists. Some experts estimate that around half of the secondary art market consists of forgeries and misattributions. Certain inauthentic works—made by infamous forgers such as Han van Meegeren (who made bogus Vermeers) and Wolfgang Beltracchi (responsible for hundreds of phony works)—are prized for their novelty and tales of exposure. Other times, artworks can initially be written off as forgeries but later identified as genuine through scientific analysis.

Museums are not impervious to these phenomena. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, has a 1624 portrait of Spain’s King Philip IV that it deemed in the 1970s to have been created by an assistant to Diego Velázquez, only to reauthenticate it fully to the Spanish Baroque painter in 2010.

When in doubt, experts lean on the three-legged stool of art authentication: stylistic scrutiny, provenance, and scientific analysis. (The Velázquez reattribution was thanks to the latter, after varnish removal.)

In a comprehensive 1963 book titled Forgeries, Fakes, and Reproductions, author George Savage writes at the close of the preface that “the collector may take heart from the fact that at no time during the history of the art-market has forgery been so difficult as it is now, or more likely to be detected, and the forger’s task is becoming continually more difficult.” Be that as it may, it doesn’t appear that forgers have stopped in the decades since.

Below are nine of the most faked and forged artists.
