Porter Airlines
, the Canada-based regional carrier that has become the largest Embraer E195-E2 operator in the world, announced four new routes from Hamilton, Canada, adding new domestic connections from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) to four key cities in the country.
First flights from Hamilton
On February 4, Porter Airlines announced its first-ever flights from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) starting in June. The airline will connect the airport, located within the GTHA, to Calgary International Airport
(YYC), Edmonton International Airport (YEG), Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), and Vancouver International Airport
(YVR) daily.

The carrier highlighted that its “distinct approach” to economy class travel will be welcomed in Hamilton, Canada, with its signature experience beginning with complimentary wine and beer served in glassware. Premium snacks are also available to every passenger, while the quartet of new itineraries will be operated by its E195-E2s
, which have a two-by-two configuration.
For passengers looking to enjoy a more premium experience, PorterReserve fares include fresh meals, premium cocktails (only on longer flights), and extra legroom seats at the front of the aircraft, as well as booking-related features.
Michael Deluce, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Porter Airlines, remarked that the carrier’s passenger experience was unlike anything that Hamilton’s travelers have seen before.
“Hamiltonians and their neighbours have long deserved a commitment such as what Porter is making, with four routes connecting them across the country.”
Deluce added that there are significant opportunities in Hamilton to expand its network across North America. With the community able to support these flights, the airline could be positioned to offer additional flights from the airport.
Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning system showed that Porter Airlines has not operated flights from/to Hamilton Airport since its establishment in 2006.

Investing in the airport
Porter Airlines reiterated that the new domestic services will coincide with enhancements that are currently underway at Hamilton Airport.
Cole Horncastle, the executive managing director of Hamilton airport, said that Porter Airlines has become the airport’s “strategic airline partner” as YHM continues investing in the airport’s success today and well into the future.
“Porter’s elevated economy service, onboard experience, and air service connecting passengers to and from key destinations across Canada are a perfect fit for the stress-free, convenient airport experience we offer here at Hamilton International.”

When Porter Airlines begins flying from Hamilton International, it will become the only airline that offers flights from all three major GTHA airports, including Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and Toronto Pearson International Airport
(YYZ).

Breaking up a monopoly
Cirium’s Diio Mi showed that out of the four new routes that Porter Airlines is planning, three, namely to Calgary, Edmonton, and Halifax, are only operated by WestJet
.
The Canadian airline has scheduled 26 weekly departures from Hamilton, with daily flights to Edmonton and Halifax and 12 weekly departures to Calgary, compared to Porter Airlines’ daily flights to three monopolized and the single to-be-monopolized route.

WestJet operates the trio of itineraries with its Boeing 737-700
aircraft, which, in comparison, has higher operating costs than the E195-E2, in part due to the difference in the maximum takeoff weights (MTOW) of the two – the E195-E2’s MTOW is 62,000 kilograms (136,687 pounds), while the 737-700’s is 70,080 kg (154,500 lb) – and due to the E195-E2 having a next-generation and thus, more efficient engine on its wings.
