Make in India, for the World: RITES Limited builds export momentum with key deliveries and fresh orders – Indian PSU
RITES Limited is accelerating its emergence as a global railway solutions provider, significantly expanding its export footprint across Southern Africa. Through successful delivery of advanced rolling stock and a steady pipeline of international orders, the company is showcasing India’s growing strength in delivering end-to-end, technology-driven rail infrastructure solutions under the vision of “Make in India, for the World.”
A major milestone has been achieved in Mozambique, where RITES has completed the supply of 10 Cape Gauge diesel-electric locomotives (3,300 HP) to national operator CFM (Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique). The final consignment arrived at Maputo Port on April 16, 2026, marking the completion of the logistics phase of the contract signed in December 2023.
Manufactured at Banaras Locomotive Works, the locomotives are specifically engineered for Cape Gauge (1,067 mm) networks and built to perform under demanding operational conditions. Featuring AC-AC traction systems, microprocessor-based controls, remote monitoring, advanced fault diagnostics, and high-performance braking systems, they deliver a strong combination of efficiency, safety, and enhanced crew comfort for long-haul operations.
What sets this project apart is its engineering complexity. India’s railway manufacturing ecosystem is predominantly aligned with broad gauge systems, making this export a significant technical achievement. It required extensive design adaptation, specialised engineering, coordinated vendor ecosystems, and seamless logistics execution—from production and testing to international shipment and delivery—highlighting India’s growing capability in turnkey railway exports.
The Mozambique project also reinforces a long-standing partnership between RITES and CFM, which has included previous supplies of locomotives and passenger coaches. With nearly one-third of CFM’s locomotive fleet now sourced from India, this collaboration underscores deepening bilateral ties in rail infrastructure development.
Beyond Mozambique, RITES continues to strengthen its regional presence:
- In South Africa, new contracts from Talis Group and Ndalama Group involve customised 3,100 HP Cape Gauge locomotives tailored to specific operational requirements.
- In Zimbabwe, an order from Berhard Group marks entry into another strategically important rail network.
- Back in Mozambique, a repeat order from ICVL for five additional locomotives reflects sustained trust and long-term demand.
Collectively, these developments go beyond commercial success—they position RITES as a key contributor to rail-led logistics, trade connectivity, and infrastructure modernisation across Africa.
They also reinforce India’s rising stature as a dependable global partner in complex infrastructure delivery—capable of offering cost-effective, customised, and high-performance railway solutions aligned with international standards.
