Public sector engineering major BEML Limited is undertaking a major transformation of its research and development (R&D) ecosystem as it seeks to evolve from a manufacturing-driven enterprise into a technology-led company. The company is significantly increasing investments in innovation and indigenous product development across rail, defence, mining, construction, and future mobility segments.

According to BEML’s Annual Report for FY2025-26, the company invested a record ₹251 crore in R&D, marking a 150 per cent increase over the previous financial year. R&D expenditure rose sharply to 6.25 per cent of revenue, compared with 2.57 per cent in FY2024-25, reflecting the company’s strategic shift towards technology-led growth.

BEML intends to sustain R&D investments at around 6-7 per cent of annual revenue over the next five years as it strengthens indigenous technology capabilities and reduces dependence on imported technologies.

As part of this strategy, BEML is targeting the development of 35-40 indigenous products spanning strategic sectors including rail transportation, defence equipment, mining and construction machinery, and future mobility solutions.

The company has also initiated a comprehensive restructuring of its R&D ecosystem, aimed at accelerating innovation, improving product development cycles, and creating globally competitive technologies aligned with India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

BEML’s financial performance during FY2025-26 underlines its growth momentum. The company reported its highest-ever annual revenue of ₹4,351 crore, registering an 8.16 per cent year-on-year increase. It also achieved a record value of production of ₹4,239 crore.

Capital expenditure during the year stood at ₹379 crore, including ₹191 crore invested in capital work-in-progress, reflecting the company’s continued focus on expanding manufacturing capabilities and modernising infrastructure.

The sharp increase in R&D spending signals BEML’s intent to position itself as a leading indigenous technology developer capable of addressing the evolving requirements of India’s infrastructure, defence and mobility sectors while enhancing its competitiveness in global markets.
