Bharat Taxi Expands to Mumbai; Piyush Goyal Launches Driver Onboarding Initiative – Indian PSU
In a significant boost to organised urban mobility, Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, inaugurated the Bharat Taxi driver onboarding initiative in Mumbai.
The programme, held at Kamla Vihar Sports Club in Kandivali West, saw participation from hundreds of auto-rickshaw and cab drivers, along with representatives from transport unions and cooperative associations. The initiative aims to strengthen driver welfare, promote digital enablement, and expand structured urban mobility systems.
Focus on Driver Empowerment and Digital Inclusion
Addressing the gathering, Piyush Goyal highlighted the importance of cooperative and technology-driven models in India’s evolving mobility landscape. He noted that platforms like Bharat Taxi enable drivers to become active partners while benefiting from digital tools that enhance transparency, improve earnings, and uphold dignity of labour.
He emphasised that such initiatives represent the future of India’s urban transport ecosystem.
Strengthening Driver-First Mobility Systems
The onboarding drive is part of broader efforts to build driver-centric mobility networks across major cities. By simplifying registration processes, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring steady access to ride demand, the initiative seeks to create a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem for both drivers and commuters.
Mumbai now joins a growing network of cities—including Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Lucknow—where organised mobility platforms are expanding rapidly.
Strong Growth Indicators
Bharat Taxi’s recent operational data reflects its rapid expansion:
- Over 5.17 lakh drivers onboarded
- More than 50 lakh customers registered
- Nearly 10 lakh rides per month across cities
Speaking on the occasion, Vivek Pandey, COO of Bharat Taxi, described Mumbai as a high-potential market and highlighted strong support from local driver unions, reinforcing confidence in the platform’s expansion strategy.
Aligned with National Vision
The expansion aligns with the vision of Amit Shah, Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, to establish Bharat Taxi across all major Indian cities over the next three years. Mumbai marks a key milestone in this nationwide roadmap.
The initiative reflects the Government’s continued push toward technology-driven, inclusive, and cooperative mobility frameworks that address the evolving needs of drivers and commuters in metropolitan regions.
