The Mozambique LNG project, in which Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) holds a stake, has reached 42% completion following the resumption of work in November 2025. The project is being operated by TotalEnergies, with an estimated investment of $20 billion.
Located in Mozambique’s Offshore Area 1, the LNG project is one of the largest energy developments globally. BPCL, through its subsidiary Bharat PetroResources Limited, holds a 10% participating interest. Other Indian stakeholders include ONGC Videsh Limited with 16% and Oil India Limited with 4%.
The project had been suspended in April 2021 due to terrorist attacks in northern Mozambique. Work resumed toward the end of 2025 after the force majeure condition was lifted, marking a crucial restart for the mega LNG venture.
The Mozambique LNG project is expected to significantly enhance global LNG supply while strengthening India’s energy security, especially at a time when geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt energy supply chains.
India’s natural gas consumption stood at 69.7 billion cubic meters in FY 2025–26, with more than 50% dependent on imports, underlining the importance of overseas energy assets.
Currently, over 6,000 workers are deployed at the site, developing vast reserves estimated at over 75 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
The achievement of 42% completion marks a significant milestone in the project’s progress, reinforcing its role in boosting global LNG capacity and supporting India’s long-term energy strategy.
