Interracial Couple Accuses American Airlines Of Discrimination After Being Wrongfully Detained
A newlywed couple from Phoenix, Arizona, is suing 
American Airlines
, claiming racial discrimination and false imprisonment after a fellow passenger reported the husband as a suspected human trafficker on a flight from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
to Miami International Airport
. The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida, alleges that the airline did not investigate the claims properly and instead escalated the situation, resulting in a humiliating encounter with law enforcement, according to The Independent.

The incident and crew’s response
In September 2022, retired police officer Anthony Williams, 63, and his wife Katsiaryna Shasholka, 34, were on their honeymoon in Miami. Williams, who is Black, and Shasholka, who is white and a Russian national, were having a good time on their trip until a fellow traveler became suspicious and accused Williams of trafficking his wife to the flight staff. The couple had taken a selfie together during the flight, smiling and appearing at ease, which is included as evidence in the lawsuit to show that no distress or coercion was evident.
According to the lawsuit, the flight attendants notified police after the plane landed without carrying out any more investigations or speaking with the couple directly. Following their escort from the plane by American Airlines staff, the couple was taken into custody by Miami-Dade police officers, who interrogated them in front of other travelers. According to the complaint, Williams and Shasholka were “humiliated” and suffered from “mental pain and suffering, sleeplessness, paranoia, panic attacks, fear, anxiety, embarrassment,” as a result of the event, which was caught on camera.
“There was nothing in our interactions the entire flight that would be indicative of somebody who was being held against their will,” Williams said in a phone interview with The Independent. “We were just two people having a good time.“
The couple reached out to American Airlines the following day to file a complaint, but Williams says they received no response. The emotional toll of the incident has continued to affect them, with Shasholka reportedly experiencing a panic attack while flying to Dubai shortly thereafter.
Williams and Shasholka are seeking $75,000 in damages for the emotional distress caused by the incident.

“Pattern of racial discrimination,” said the attorney
The lawsuit was filed by renowned civil rights attorney Jasmine Rand, known for representing the families of Trayvon Martin and George Floyd in high-profile cases. Rand said in a statement to The New York Times that “American Airlines’ pattern of racial discrimination of its passengers is intolerable,” and the couple’s encounter was another example of the carrier’s racial profiling.
In response to an inquiry from Simple Flying, an American Airlines representative said the following: “American strives to provide a positive experience to everyone who travels with us. We are reviewing the allegations of the complaint.“

Previous complaints
This lawsuit is the latest in a series of allegations against American Airlines involving racial discrimination. A 2023 incident involving professional guitarist David Ryan Harris, who was accused of trafficking his own children. Harris, who is African American, was detained by police after a flight attendant reported that his biracial children appeared unresponsive during an interaction.
In December of last year, American said it settled a lawsuit filed by three Black men who said they’d been wrongly removed from a flight from Phoenix to New York last January because of a complaint about body odor.

The New York Times reported that the American civil rights group N.A.A.C.P. issued travel advice for African American tourists in 2017, expressing concerns about American Airlines’ “corporate culture of racial insensitivity and potential racial bias.” This advisory came after several reports of racial discrimination involving the airline. Black travelers were advised to exercise caution when traveling with the airline. However, once American Airlines promised to establish a committee aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, the advice was lifted around nine months later.
According to spokesperson Alicia Mercedes, the N.A.A.C.P. continues to communicate with the airline to review best practices and make sure that fair travel experiences are given priority, notwithstanding this agreement. Despite the airline’s prior pledges of reform, the latest incident involving Williams and Shasholka underscores the ongoing difficulties with racial profiling and prejudice at the company.
