NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Navratna power company NLC India Limited, has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from fellow Navratna PSU SJVN Limited for the development of a 200 MW wind power project.

The project has been awarded following a competitive bidding process conducted by SJVN for the selection of wind power developers for the supply of 600 MW of wind power from Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected wind power projects across India.

NIRL participated in the Request for Selection (RfS) floated by SJVN and emerged as a successful bidder. Following the conclusion of the bidding process, SJVN issued the LoA to NIRL for a wind power project with a contracted capacity of 200 MW.

The award marks another step in NLC India’s expanding presence in the renewable energy sector as the company seeks to diversify its generation portfolio beyond its traditional coal- and lignite-based operations.

NLC India’s Renewable Energy Expansion

NLC India has been steadily increasing its focus on renewable energy as part of its broader strategy to expand its clean energy portfolio. While the company has traditionally been associated with lignite mining and thermal power generation, renewable energy is becoming an increasingly important component of its future growth plans.

The 200 MW wind power project will add to the renewable energy portfolio of NLC India through its dedicated subsidiary, NIRL. The project also provides the company with an opportunity to further strengthen its capabilities in developing and operating utility-scale wind power assets.

The latest order comes amid an increasing focus among public sector power companies on expanding their renewable energy portfolios. With solar and wind projects becoming an important part of India’s evolving power mix, PSUs are increasingly participating in competitive bidding processes to secure renewable energy projects across the country.

Strategic Significance for NLC India

The SJVN award is significant for NLC India not only because of the additional 200 MW capacity but also because it reinforces the company’s strategy of building a larger presence in renewable energy.

For NIRL, the project adds another utility-scale wind power development to its portfolio and could strengthen its credentials for participating in future renewable energy tenders.

For NLC India, the expansion into wind power represents a gradual shift towards a more diversified generation portfolio, with renewable energy complementing its established lignite-based power business.

The 200 MW project therefore fits into the company’s broader objective of scaling up its renewable energy presence while continuing to operate its conventional power and mining businesses.
