NTPC Green Floats EPC Tender for 3,300 MWh Battery Energy Storage Project at Khavda, Gujarat – Indian PSU

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has invited bids for the development of a massive 3,300 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at NTPC Renewable Energy Limited’s (NTPC REL) Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, marking another significant step in India’s clean energy and grid-balancing infrastructure expansion.

According to the tender document, NGEL has issued an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) tender for the project, with the bid submission deadline set for June 25, 2026.

The selected contractor will be responsible for the complete turnkey execution of the project, including design, engineering, procurement, supply, transportation, installation, testing and commissioning of the grid-connected battery energy storage system. The scope also covers integration of the BESS with the solar power plant and the electricity grid to ensure seamless operation.

In addition to equipment supply and installation, the successful bidder will oversee unloading, storage, erection supervision, testing and final commissioning activities, while ensuring compatibility with the balance-of-system (BoS) infrastructure.

The tender comes as Khavda emerges as a major renewable energy hub. The region already hosts some of the country’s largest energy storage installations, including a 3.37 GWh BESS project developed by Adani Green Energy Limited, which was completed within 10 months of the commencement of on-site construction.

NGEL has laid down stringent technical requirements for the project. The battery system must have a design life of 25 years and be capable of delivering at least 10,000 charge-discharge cycles over its operational lifespan.

The company has also mandated that bidders ensure a minimum dispatchable capacity of 92% at the Point of Interconnection (POI) throughout the 15-year operating period. The system is expected to deliver 100% of rated dispatchable capacity at the Commercial Operation Date (CoD) and maintain at least 95% during the first year of operation.

Further, bidders must account for system losses beyond the termination point up to the POI while determining the final BESS nameplate capacity.

The contract includes a comprehensive 15-year Operation and Maintenance (O&M) package, covering warranty support and an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) under a Service Level Agreement (SLA).

To ensure long-term performance and reliability, NGEL has stipulated a minimum monthly Round Trip Efficiency (RTE) of 80%, including auxiliary consumption, along with an annual system availability requirement of 98%.

The large-scale storage project is expected to strengthen renewable energy integration at Khavda, improve grid stability and support India’s growing transition towards a cleaner and more flexible power system.
