It will become Scotland’s sixth National Performing Company, joining the National Theatre of Scotland, Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
A public consultation has been launched to gather views on the shape and priorities of the new organisation.
The Scottish Government is seeking input from the traditional music community and the public to ensure the company reflects the needs of the sector.
An online survey is now open, while Culture Secretary Mairi McAllan is set to chair a roundtable with leaders from the traditional music scene.
The move follows a pledge made by First Minister John Swinney to deliver tangible progress within his government’s first 100 days.
A 2024 VisitScotland survey found that 79% of Scots feel traditional music gives them a sense of cultural connection, while 88% believe it is vital to preserve it for future generations.
The traditional music sector also plays a significant economic role, with Scottish music businesses reporting a turnover of £27.4 million in 2023.
The new National Performing Company is expected to secure and celebrate this cultural and economic legacy for years to come.
First Minister John Swinney said: “Traditional Scottish music has a unique, rich sound reflecting our history and regional diversity.
“It connects our past to our present and is loved across Scotland and around the world.
“That is why I pledged that in the first 100 days of this government we would make progress on forming a National Performing Company to protect the legacy of trad music and help it to thrive.
“Giving it the same platform to other performing arts will support established and emerging talents to grow.
