Uttar Pradesh has a hockey legacy few states can match. It is the land of Major Dhyan Chand and K.D. Singh ‘Babu’, two names that helped shape the history of Indian hockey. The challenge today is to ensure that this legacy produces a new generation of champions.

That is where the appointment of Dr. Utkarsh Sinha as Associate Vice President of Uttar Pradesh Hockey and Chairperson of the proposed Uttar Pradesh Hockey Premier League (UPHPL) becomes significant.

A senior journalist, former sportsperson and sports enthusiast, Sinha brings a combination of sporting experience and an understanding of communication and public engagement. His biggest opportunity could be to connect the state’s grassroots hockey with a more professional competitive structure.

The UPHPL should not become simply another tournament. Its real value will lie in creating a pathway for young players from districts, schools and rural areas to reach higher levels of competition.

Sinha’s experience in journalism could also help bring greater visibility to players and competitions outside the traditional hockey centres. Talent in Uttar Pradesh is unlikely to be the problem; identifying it and giving it a pathway will be.

The real test, therefore, will not be the glamour surrounding the launch of the league. It will be whether more young players are discovered, developed and given meaningful opportunities to compete.

Dhyan Chand and K.D. Singh ‘Babu’ gave Uttar Pradesh a remarkable hockey legacy.

Dr. Utkarsh Sinha now has the opportunity to help turn that legacy into a sustainable future.

The legends built the legacy. The challenge now is to build the pipeline for the next generation.
