Several routes worldwide that were dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic have still not been resumed. However, airlines are now gradually re-instating them, with American Airlines bringing back a Chicago to Colorado Springs flight as a recent example.
American Airlines brings back Chicago-Colorado Springs flight
According to a recent announcement by the Colorado Springs Airport (COS),
American Airlines
will restart service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Colorado Springs next summer.
The airline removed the route in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the service will come back on June 5, 2025. Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for Colorado Springs Airport, considers this a win for the airport and the city and feels that this will be a crucial service for the local community. Jordan Pack, American’s Director of Domestic Network Planning, commented,
“American is pleased to offer nonstop service from Colorado Springs to our Chicago O’Hare hub. Complementing existing service to Dallas/Fort Worth, this new service will offer customers convenient connections and shorter travel times on American to cities across the Midwest, Northeast, and abroad to destinations in Europe including Barcelona and Italy’s Amalfi Coast.”
Changes to network
American’s network has undergone a few other changes recently. For example, the carrier will restart service from
Columbus International Airport in Ohio to Los Angeles
in March 2025.
American already has a presence at Columbus Airport and connects it with several of its other hubs. Passengers between Columbus and Los Angeles fly in significant numbers on connecting flights, and American wants to capitalize on the trend.
The airline said that “Los Angeles joins a lineup of eleven other nonstop destinations, giving customers convenient and robust access to American’s comprehensive global network of more than 350 destinations from just one stop.”

Recently, American also resumed service to La Romana (LRM) in the Dominican Republic from Miami International Airport (MIA). While the service was previously operated by American Eagle with an Embraer E145 and later by E175, American now deploys its mainline Airbus A319 aircraft between the two destinations.
However, Haiti has been removed from the carrier’s network, with American deciding to cancel nonstop service between its hub in Miami and Port-au-Prince, Haiti indefinitely. Earlier, the carrier had suspended the flight until February 2025 following the bullet strike incident with one of its planes in Haiti.
Other American Airlines news
There’s been a general trend of US carriers updating their Q4 guidance following record-breaking travel in the current season. American Airlines, too, joined the group and said that the pricing and revenue environment has continued to improve since the Company’s prior fourth-quarter guidance issued on October 24.

As reported by Simple Flying earlier
, the carrier’s total revenue per available seat mile (TRASM) will likely stay flat or improve slightly by 1% year-on-year (YoY). American’s previous guidance said that unit revenues would decrease by 1% to 3% YoY.
According to the latest figures released by the airline, American Airlines has flown more than 2.1 million flights across 1.8 billion miles this year.
