Summary
- ITA Airways continues adding services to London City Airport (LCY), adding flights from Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO).
- The airline already operates flights between Milan Linate Airport (LIN) and LCY.
- Prior to getting its Airbus A220-100s, which are the only aircraft in its fleet to be able to operate to LCY, ITA Airways had to wet lease Embraer E190s.
ITA Airways continues expanding its capacity to London City Airport (LCY), with the airline adding flights from its central hub, Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO), starting March 31, 2024. The flights will be operated by Airbus A220-100 aircraft.
More capacity to LCY
The airline will serve the route with its Airbus A220-100 aircraft 12 times per week, adding that LCY is the British capital’s most central airport, known for its punctuality, speed of service, and smooth passenger experience. As such, travelers will benefit from flying between the two cities’ most central airports, LCY and FCO, with seamless connections offered at FCO to destinations in the Mediterranean and even South America.

Emiliana Limosani, the chief commercial officer (CCO) of ITA Airways and the chief executive officer (CEO) of Volare, highlighted that while business travelers primarily use LCY, leisure passengers could also find this connection an exciting option as well.
“The UK is confirmed as an increasingly strategic market for ITA Airways, offering travelers 100 weekly flights between the UK and Italy in the current summer season.”

Key UK market
In addition to the new flights between FCO and LCY, the airline is also planning to add a daily flight from Milan Linate Airport (LIN) to LCY in April 2024. As a result, its weekly frequencies to LCY would peak at 31 during the summer season, with the extra daily flights from LIN also being operated by an Airbus A220-100.

Furthermore, ITA Airways will grow its flight schedule on the FCO-London Gatwick Airport (LGW) route, with an additional flight resulting in seven weekly itineraries being operated on the route by the Italian airline. In total, there will be 100 weekly connections operated by the carrier between Italy and the UK during the peak summer season.

Smallest aircraft
Nevertheless, ITA Airways highlighted that the Airbus A220-100 is its smallest aircraft, making it perfectly suitable for short-haul connections. Furthermore, it is the only aircraft in the carrier’s fleet that is certified to land at LCY. Prior to receiving its first A220-100, the airline wet leased Embraer E190 aircraft to fly to the airport.
In addition to having WiFi onboard the jet, ITA Airways’ Airbus A220-100s have wide seats, custom lighting, larger windows, and roomier bins, with the interiors being designed by Walter De Silva. In total, 125 passengers can fly with the aircraft in either business or economy class.

While Airbus has not certified the A220-300 to conduct the steep approaches out of LCY, Embraer was granted approval for its E195-E2 aircraft to operate at LCY. The aircraft, seating either 120 passengers or 146 in a three-class or a single-class configuration, respectively, is the largest jet to be allowed to fly out of the central London airport.
