MGL Urges Residents in Gasified Societies to Apply for PNG Connections Before LPG Supply Deadline – Indian PSU
Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has urged residents living in gasified housing societies to apply for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections at the earliest, following the Government of India’s directive requiring eligible urban households to switch from LPG to PNG wherever the infrastructure is available.
PNG is considered a safer, more economical, convenient, and environmentally friendly cooking fuel. The Government has launched a nationwide initiative to accelerate the adoption of domestic PNG connections in areas where City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks have already been established. The move is also aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported LPG, while making greater use of domestically available natural gas.
Under a Gazette Notification issued on March 24, 2026, under the Essential Commodities Act, urban households with access to PNG are required to transition to the cleaner fuel. As per Clause 7 of the notification, LPG cylinder supplies to addresses located in areas where operational PNG networks exist may be discontinued within 90 days from the effective date mentioned in the individual notices.
In line with the notification, MGL has appealed to housing societies where PNG infrastructure is already available to encourage residents to switch to PNG without delay. The company said the transition is being implemented in coordination with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), which are also required to stop supplying LPG cylinders to eligible households after the stipulated period.
MGL currently serves more than 32 lakh households across Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, Dharashiv, Chitradurga and Davangere. The company has laid over 8,000 kilometres of steel and polyethylene pipelines to expand its network further.
The company cautioned that the complete PNG connection process—including last-mile connectivity, installation and commissioning—may take up to two months depending on site-specific conditions. Residents have therefore been advised not to wait until the last date mentioned in the notification to submit their applications.
To make the transition easier, MGL has introduced flexible and customer-friendly payment plans aimed at improving affordability and accelerating PNG adoption among residential consumers. The company is also implementing a special initiative to extend PNG connectivity to government institutions.
Commenting on the development, Praveer Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Limited, said, “We urge consumers to avail their PNG connection at the earliest opportunity and avoid any disruption to their domestic gas supply. Our marketing and customer care teams are fully equipped to assist residents through every step of the registration and installation process as we remain committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless transition for all residents in areas where PNG infrastructure has been commissioned.”
