American Airlines has scheduled flights with the Boeing 787 from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) for the first time. From October 27th, the carrier will fly daily from the airport to Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) with its 787-9s. This will be the first time the airline’s 787 Dreamliners have been scheduled to operate regular flights from the airport. Currently, American Airlines’ deploys the Boeing 777-300ER on its daily flights between JFK and Delhi.

From October 27th, the flights will operate as per the following schedule on a daily basis:
- Flight AA292 departs JFK at 19:45 and arrives in DEL at 21:35 (+1 day), with a block time of 15 hours and 20 minutes
- Flight AA293 departs DEL at 00:20 and arrives in JFK at 06:45 (+1 day), with a block time of 16 hours and 55 minutes
More than 8,000 seats per month in each direction
Data from Cirium shows that from October 27th, which marks the start of the IATA winter season, American Airlines will offer a total of 8,550 seats per month in each direction between the two airports. The carrier’s Boeing 787-9s seat a total of 285 passengers in a three-class configuration – 30 in business class, 21 in premium economy, and 186 in economy class.

According to ch-aviation, the oneworld member airline currently operates 22 Boeing 787-9s, and has a further 30 on order. The 787-9s currently in American Airlines’ fleet have an average age of 5.9 years old. These aircraft are in addition to 37 787-8s, which have an average age of 6.4 years old.
The newer 787-9s to enter the fleet will feature American Airlines’ premium-heavy configuration, accommodating a total of just 244 passengers – 51 in business class, 32 in premium economy, and 161 in economy class. By contrast, the carrier’s fleet of 20 777-300ERs that currently operate the New York JFK – Delhi route seat a total of 304 passengers and are, on average, 10.1 years old. Later this year, these aircraft are due to be retrofitted to also include a more premium-heavy layout.

A limited presence in India
The New York JFK – Delhi service is currently American Airlines’ only route to and from India. The airline faces competitoin in the form of Air India, which also operates to JFK, and from United Airlines, which flies to Delhi from its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Air India continues to operate by far the largest number of flights between India and the US, with direct flights to a handful of gateways across the country, including Chicago (ORD) and San Francisco (SFO).
